The caption ties this view to the landing used by the New York Yacht Club at Newport, Rhode Island, though the record notes that the title comes from unverified Bain News Service data. Newport became a summer playground for wealthy New Yorkers in the late nineteenth century, and the club's members came there to race and socialize, with yachts moored off the waterfront and boats ferrying passengers to shore. The Bain News Service, a commercial press agency active in the early twentieth century, made pictures like this one for newspapers and magazines, so the glass negative records how the Gilded Age yachting scene was documented for a wide audience.
