The landing takes its name from the New York Yacht Club, whose members used Newport, Rhode Island, as a summer base for racing and society in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Wealthy New York families kept large sailing yachts in Newport's harbor, and club landings like this one were where crews, guests and launches met the boats. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a New York news service whose photographers recorded events and everyday scenes for newspapers. The title comes from unverified caption information, so the exact date is uncertain.
