Newport's harbor, crowded with sailing yachts, a steam vessel, and a scatter of rowboats, is the setting for this lithograph. Newport had become a fashionable summer resort by the early 1870s, and wealthy yachtsmen from New York and elsewhere gathered there each season to race and show off their boats. Currier & Ives, the New York firm at 125 Nassau Street, produced many such views of American leisure for a middle-class market eager to see how the well-to-do spent their summers. The print is useful for comparing the rigging and hull shapes of yachts of the period with the working sail and steam craft that shared the water.
