Few racing yachts of the era drew as much public attention as the *Independence*, shown here under sail during the 1901 America's Cup races. That season, American syndicates put forward several boats to meet the British challenger Shamrock II, and the contest drew large crowds to the waters off New York. The photograph is credited to F. A. Walter of Schermerhorn Street in Brooklyn, a studio that documented local maritime and sporting subjects. Its record shows the yacht's racing rig and the sharp, tall sail plan typical of the period's large cutters.
