Model sailboats set off from the park's water in this view of a yacht start, a pastime that drew city crowds to the lakes and ponds of Central Park. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a news photography service that supplied pictures to New York newspapers in the early twentieth century. The record gives no firm date, and the title comes from caption cards whose details have not been verified, so the specific race is unidentified. The scene still shows how organized sailing and crowds of onlookers were part of the park's leisure life in that period.
