The Standart was the imperial yacht built in Germany in 1895 for Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, and this print carries the name the Bain News Service recorded with the negative. That caption data is unverified, so the exact vessel shown should be checked before it is cited. Built for cruising the Baltic and Finnish coast, the steam yacht carried the imperial family and their guests on state and holiday voyages, and it stood as a symbol of the Romanov court's taste for luxury afloat. News photographs from the Bain files were often made for daily newspapers, which is part of what makes them useful to historians of maritime life.
