Red Star cabs are the subject here, with the Capitol rising in the background, so the picture places a working taxi fleet beside the nation's most recognizable building. The Red Star name points to one of the private taxi operators that filled Washington's streets in the late 1920s, when cabs were a common way for government workers, visitors and residents to get across the city. Setting everyday traffic against the Capitol dome was a familiar way for photographers of the period to tie the city's street life to its national symbol. Dated to about 1929, the scene records the cars and streets of that era as much as the building itself.
