Seen from along the city wall, this view of Peking looks toward the Emperor's Palace, the walled imperial complex now known as the Forbidden City. The palace was built in the early 15th century and served as the seat of Ming and Qing emperors until the Qing dynasty fell in 1912. William Henry Jackson made the negative in 1895 while traveling with the World's Transportation Commission, and Harper's Weekly printed it as a halftone in 1896. The picture is a useful record of how the imperial city looked to Western visitors at the close of the 19th century.
