The Hırka-i Şerif mosque, in the grounds of Topkapı Palace, holds the second of the two mantles traditionally associated with the Prophet Muhammad. The record credits Sultan Abdülmecid I with building it, and this view of its courtyard, dated between 1880 and 1893, shows the complex during the reign of Abdul Hamid II. By then the sultans had moved their residence to Dolmabahçe, so Topkapı was mainly a site of ceremony and sacred relics. The print comes from an album by Abdullah Frères, an Istanbul studio whose photographs of imperial sites circulated widely, and its caption appears in both Ottoman Turkish and French.
