Few rooms in Topkapi Palace carried as much formal weight as this audience chamber, where the sultan or grand vizier received officials and visitors. Abdullah Frères, a Constantinople studio run by Armenian brothers, made the print sometime between 1880 and 1893, when Sultan Abdul-Hamid II was reshaping the Ottoman court and his photographers were documenting its settings. It was issued as a numbered view in an album captioned in Ottoman Turkish and French, which suggests it was meant for an educated audience at home and abroad. The albumen process, common at the time, gives the room's proportions a crisp, formal clarity.
