Few views of Istanbul's Yildiz grounds frame a palace and a mosque together, and this albumen print shows both alongside a lake or pond in the park. Sultan Abdülhamid II made Yildiz his principal residence in the 1880s, expanding a hilltop estate above the Bosphorus into a landscape of pavilions, gardens and water features, and the Hamidiye Mosque was raised within those grounds in the same years. The print is probably the work of the Abdullah Frères studio, whose album captions appeared in both Ottoman Turkish and French.
