Few things in Topkapi Palace draw the eye like its glazed ceramic tiles, and this print isolates one such surface in close detail. It was made by Abdullah Frères, the Istanbul studio run by the Abdullah brothers, who photographed the Ottoman court and its monuments in the 1880s and early 1890s. The palace had been the main residence of the sultans for nearly four centuries until the court moved to newer buildings in the mid-nineteenth century, so by this time it was valued more for its history and craftsmanship than as a working seat of government. The print belongs to an album later held in the collection of Sultan Abdul-Hamid II, and its albumen process, with its warm tones, was the standard photographic method of the period.
