In 1913, Indiana's railroads carried much of the state's freight and passengers, and the Wabash Railroad was one of the main lines crossing the state from the Mississippi valley toward Detroit and Toledo. Its bridges over the Wabash River and its tributaries connected farm towns, grain elevators, and factories to larger markets in Chicago, St. Louis, and the East. Indiana was then a state of growing cities and steady farm output, with manufacturing in towns along the rail lines. Spring floods that year raised rivers across the state and tested bridges and embankments, making sound crossings a matter of local concern. For the people who lived along the line, a railroad bridge meant a dependable link to work, mail, and markets, and a span like this one was a familiar sight in daily life.
