Red Jacket, a mining community on the Mesabi Range in northeastern Minnesota, was part of the iron country around Virginia in 1911. Iron ore from the Mesabi had transformed the region since the 1890s, and the ore moved by rail to Lake Superior docks at Duluth and Two Harbors. Its mines and rail yards drew large numbers of Finnish, Italian, Slovene, and Croatian immigrants, who built churches, halls, and lodges alongside the company locations. A new bridge carrying traffic across the mine district was a practical improvement for workers and freight, and its dedication marked a moment when local residents expected the iron boom to continue.
