Purdue University, in the Wabash River town of Lafayette, Indiana, had been a land-grant school since 1869, and by 1913 its football games drew large crowds of students, alumni, and townspeople. The title records a contest between Purdue and Northwestern, the Evanston, Illinois, school that was then a rival in the Western Conference, the forerunner of the Big Ten. Lafayette in these years was a mix of railroad traffic, factories, and farm trade, and a home game was a rare chance for the whole town to gather in one place. The spring floods of 1913 had recently swept much of Indiana, so a crowd filling the stands that autumn would have been a sign of a community back in its ordinary routines.
