Purdue squad, Lafayette, Indiana, 1913. The team pictured belonged to Purdue University, the land-grant college in West Lafayette, just across the Wabash River from the older city of Lafayette. In 1913 the school was still closely tied to agriculture and engineering, drawing many students from farms and railroad towns across the state, and football was becoming a major source of college pride and newspaper attention. Lafayette depended on its rail lines, its factories, and the river trade, and the community had felt the effects of the high water that swept through the Wabash valley earlier that spring. For students, alumni, and local readers, a team portrait like this one marked the men who would represent the school that autumn.
