In 1913, Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana, was a land-grant school that had grown steadily since it opened in 1874, drawing students for engineering and agriculture as the state's industries expanded. Lafayette itself depended on railroads, factories, and trade along the Wabash River, and the university's ties to the surrounding farms and workshops shaped its civic life. This photograph records a football contest between Purdue and Wabash College, the small men's liberal arts school in Crawfordsville, whose rivalry was one of the older competitions in the state. Crowds that autumn gathered on the sidelines in heavy coats, following a sport that was still new to many of the towns it drew fans from. The title's score, 26 for Purdue, marks a win that supporters in Lafayette would have talked about for weeks afterward.
