This half-length daguerreotype shows Clement Claiborne Clay with his head turned slightly to the right, its gold toning giving the portrait a warm, soft finish. Clay represented Alabama in the U.S. Senate at the time, and Brady's studio image was engraved as a woodcut in *Harper's Weekly* on February 25, 1860, which carried portraits of prominent public men to a national readership. Clay left the Senate in early 1861 when Alabama seceded and later served in the Confederate Senate, so the plate records a politician on the eve of the sectional crisis.
