Scratched into the back of this plate is the inscription "Sen. Henry S. Foote, Miss.," which identifies the sitter as the Mississippi senator who was active in Washington during the sectional debates of the late 1840s and early 1850s. Foote took a prominent part in the fight over the Compromise of 1850, and this half-length view, turned slightly to the right, reflects the formal portrait style favored by public men of the period. The plate was produced in the studio of Mathew Brady, whose gallery supplied daguerreotypes of many political figures. The gold toning gives the silver image a warmer, more durable surface than an untreated plate would have had.
