A 1937 silkscreen poster from the Works Progress Administration's Des Moines program announces a series of youth forums led by E.W. Balduf, with the sessions held at the Y.W.C.A. on Ninth and H. The federal art projects of the New Deal produced many silkscreen posters to advertise free public lectures, classes and community events, often printed cheaply in large runs and posted in libraries, schools and storefronts. Forums like this one drew on the Depression-era belief that open discussion of civic questions could help young people make sense of an uncertain economy and a changing country. The stamp on the back, marking it as official business, is a reminder that such posters were produced as working government materials rather than as collectible art.
