Frederick III appears here as Emperor of Germany, the title used for the Holy Roman Emperor, a post he held from 1452 until his death in 1493. He was the last ruler crowned emperor in Rome by a pope, and much of his long reign went to building up Habsburg lands in Austria. The caption card credits the plate to Basan after Soutman, though that attribution is unverified and no date is recorded. Prints like this one copied painted portraits for wider circulation, so the face shown reflects a reproduced likeness more than a firsthand one.
