Wall Street in 1847 was the center of New York's banking and shipping trade, and this color lithograph captures the bustle of the district. August Köllner, a German-born artist who drew many New York street scenes, made the original drawing from nature, and Deroy transferred it to stone for the New York publisher Vermilye & Co. The date appears in brackets in the record, so the year is an estimate. The street's landmarks of the period included the Merchants' Exchange at Wall and Broad streets, which helps place the scene for modern viewers.
