A poster from the Great War speaks directly to newcomers, and this lithograph was aimed at foreign-born women through a division of the YWCA. Printed by Carey Print in New York and dated January 1919, it appeared in the months after the armistice, when the country turned toward campaigns urging immigrants to adopt American ways. The YWCA ran programs for immigrant women, including English classes and citizenship instruction, and posters like this one carried that appeal to a wider audience. Designed by the illustrator C. Howard Walker, it shows how wartime calls for national unity were extended to people arriving through gateways such as Ellis Island.
