Published in New York in 1876, the centennial year, this Currier & Ives lithograph takes as its subject the committee of five appointed in June 1776 to draft the Declaration of Independence. Its members were Thomas Jefferson, who wrote most of the text, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman and Robert R. Livingston. The firm sold large numbers of inexpensive prints of American history and national heroes, and this one is listed in a standard Currier & Ives catalog raisonné, which makes it a useful example of how the Revolution was pictured for a popular audience a century later.
