Jefferson reading his rough draft of the Declaration of Independence to Benjamin Franklin is the scene this print depicts, reproduced here as a halftone of a painting by Clyde Deland. It appeared in *Harper's Weekly* in 1897, when the halftone process allowed magazines to reproduce painted scenes in quantity. Jefferson wrote the draft in June 1776, and Congress revised it before adopting it on July 4, with Franklin among those who suggested changes. The picture shows how a late nineteenth-century illustrator imagined that moment of collaboration.
