Jefferson, Adams and Franklin are the three figures named in this color halftone, which reproduces J.L.G. Ferris's oil painting of the drafting of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Ferris, a painter known for patriotic history scenes, shows the committee at work, with Jefferson as the principal author of the document. The print comes from The Pageant of a Nation, a 1930s series issued by The Foundation Press of Cleveland, Ohio, which made affordable color reproductions of American historical paintings for schools and homes. Its mass-produced halftone form reflects the period's wide popular interest in national origin stories.
