The title points to July 4, 1776, the day the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia, and this lithograph revisits that moment for a nineteenth-century audience. Nathaniel Currier's New York firm, which began producing inexpensive lithographs in 1835, sold patriotic scenes like this one to a broad public, and hand coloring gave each impression a warmer, individual finish. Thomas Jefferson, the main author of the document, is the reason the scene belongs on a board devoted to him.
