Nathaniel Currier's hand-colored lithograph takes its title from the day Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia, July 4, 1776, a date Americans would celebrate for generations. Thomas Jefferson drafted most of the document, which is why the print belongs in a gallery of Jefferson material. Currier's firm, which later became Currier & Ives, sold inexpensive prints like this one to a broad middle-class market, and the hand coloring was often done by workers who applied color by eye. Such images helped shape how ordinary Americans pictured their founding decades after the event.
