A pencil sketch on yellow paper, titled in the lower right corner, shows the 9th Massachusetts Battery, the artillery unit commanded by Captain John Bigelow, moving into position at Gettysburg. The record dates it to around July 1-3, 1863, the first three days of the battle. Bigelow's guns were among the Union batteries that fought on the southern part of the field on July 2, where artillery was often pushed forward quickly to meet Confederate assaults. The drawing's loose, quick lines suggest a field study made to record a moment of movement rather than a finished composition. It is one of the Library of Congress's group of Civil War drawings, donated by J.P. Morgan in 1919.
