Cathedral Plaza in Panama City, shown here in 1909, sits at the heart of the old colonial quarter, where the cathedral looked onto an open square that served as the city's civic center. The image falls in the final months of Theodore Roosevelt's presidency, which had made the Panama Canal an American project. Roosevelt visited the isthmus in 1906, the first sitting U.S. president to leave the country, and American engineers were then pushing the canal toward completion. The streets around the plaza, laid out in the colonial era, carried the traffic of that construction boom, including workers, merchants and officials.
