Cathedral Plaza in Panama City, seen here in a wide panoramic view, opens onto the cathedral that anchors the old colonial quarter, now known as Casco Viejo. The scene belongs on a Roosevelt board because his presidency, from 1901 to 1909, was when the United States took a decisive hand in Panama. Washington backed the province's 1903 separation from Colombia and then began building the Panama Canal. The city became the gateway to that work, and its streets and plazas filled with the workers, officials and traffic the project brought. The square reflects the older city that the American effort stood beside.
