This 1909 view shows the lock site at Gatun on the Panama Canal, where engineers were building what was then the largest earthen dam in the world to hold back the Chagres River and form Gatun Lake. Roosevelt, who had begun the project's U.S. takeover in 1904, visited the isthmus in November 1906 as the first sitting American president to travel outside the country. He had left office by 1909, but the locks and dam he championed were still taking shape, and the canal opened to shipping in 1914.
