Taken in 1914, the year the Panama Canal opened, this view shows the spillway of Gatun Dam, the earthen barrier that held back the Chagres River and formed Gatun Lake, then the largest artificial lake in the world. The spillway let excess water flow out so the lake level could be controlled, which was essential to the canal's locks. Theodore Roosevelt pushed the canal project forward during his presidency and visited the isthmus in 1906 while in office, but the dam was built under the engineers and administrators who followed him.
