The Gatun Dam spillway, shown here in a wide panoramic view, sits at the heart of the Panama Canal's engineering. Built between 1907 and 1913 to hold back the Chagres River and form Gatun Lake, the earthen dam was among the largest of its kind when completed, and its spillway let excess water pass safely around the locks. The picture is tied to the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt, who championed the canal project and oversaw much of its construction during his time in office from 1901 to 1909.
