Pedro Miguel is one of the three lock sites on the Pacific side of the Panama Canal, where ships were raised or lowered between the canal's upper level and sea level. The 1914 date places the picture in the year the waterway opened to traffic, though the work itself began under Theodore Roosevelt, whose administration started the project in 1904 and pushed it forward after the earlier French effort had failed. Roosevelt considered the canal one of his signature accomplishments, and it cut the sea voyage between the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of the Americas by thousands of miles. The locks shown here reflect the engineering scale that made that shortcut possible.
