The Gatun Locks, a flight of three steps that lift ships about 85 feet from the Caribbean side up to Gatun Lake, were among the largest locks in the world when the Panama Canal opened in 1914. This view belongs to the 1939 commemoration of that opening, a 25th-anniversary observance that recalled the engineering feat. Theodore Roosevelt, whose administration launched American construction in 1904, pushed the project forward, and in 1906 he became the first sitting U.S. president to travel abroad when he visited the canal zone.
