Ancon Hill rises just outside the city of Panama and offered one of the best overlooks of Panama City and the harbor, which made it a favored vantage point for officials and visitors. This view is filed among the images tied to Theodore Roosevelt's presidency, and the context is the American effort to build the Panama Canal, which Roosevelt championed after 1903. In November 1906, he became the first sitting U.S. president to travel outside the country, visiting the isthmus to see the canal works firsthand. Views like this one help show the city and terrain that shaped the project's logistics.
