From Ancon Hill in 1930, this bird's-eye view looks down over Panama City and the land around it, a vantage that shows the capital on the Pacific side of the isthmus. The hill's height gives a wide view of streets, rooftops, and the coast. Roosevelt's name on this board points to the Panama Canal, which the United States began building in 1904 after he pushed for it as president, and the canal's Pacific entrance lies within sight of this hill. The record does not say more about the photographer or purpose, so the view is best read as a snapshot of the city's setting at the time.
