Old Panama, the colonial city whose stone ruins this 1930 view records, was founded on the Pacific coast in 1519 and served as a major port for silver and gold moving between Peru and Spain. Buccaneers under Henry Morgan sacked it in 1671, and the survivors later moved to a new site nearby, leaving the old city to decay. The picture is filed under Theodore Roosevelt, a connection that fits the isthmus's modern history, since his administration pushed the Panama Canal project that drew American attention to the region.
