The view centers on the Mount of Olives and the Garden of Gethsemane, the slope and olive grove traditionally linked to Jesus's final prayer and arrest, with the city of Jerusalem spread out beyond. The picture is a photochrom, a color process developed by the Swiss firm Photoglob in the 1880s that produced lithographic color prints from photographs. The Detroit Publishing Company held American rights to these images and sold them through illustrated catalogues, including the 1905 edition noted here, which brought views of distant places like Jerusalem to American buyers.
