This head-and-shoulders portrait shows Smedley Darlington Butler in profile, facing left, in a photograph dated August 25, 1929. Butler spent more than three decades as a Marine Corps officer and earned two Medals of Honor, one for actions at Veracruz in 1914 and one for service in Haiti in 1915. By the time this picture was made, he was among the most recognizable figures in the Corps. Later, after retiring, he became a sharp critic of militarism and business interests in foreign ventures, most famously in his 1935 book *War Is a Racket*.
