Taken on February 18, 1954, this portrait shows Harry Belafonte early in his stage career. The title, drawn from the back of the print, points to *John Murray Anderson's Almanac*, the Broadway revue in which he performed. Carl Van Vechten, the writer and photographer known for decades of portraits of performers and artists, made the gelatin silver print, which the Library of Congress received as a gift from his estate in 1966. Belafonte, born in 1927, would soon bring calypso to a wide American audience, so the sitting captures him just before that breakthrough.
