Its title quotes the opening line of Clement Clarke Moore's 1823 poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas," which turned a Dutch-inflected Santa Claus into the figure most Americans know. The card was copyrighted by Strohmeyer & Wyman, a New York firm that was a prominent publisher of stereoviews, cards that showed a pair of nearly identical photographs. Viewed through a stereoscope, the pair fused into a single three-dimensional scene, and such cards were a popular parlor entertainment in the late 1890s. The record does not name the photographer, so the scene is best read within that commercial tradition.
