Rather than the eve of the holiday, this engraving turns to the day after, as its title, a playful twist on the opening line of Clement Clarke Moore's poem, suggests. It comes from *Thomas Nast's Christmas Drawings for the Human Race*, a book published in 1890 that gathered the festive illustrations of the German-born cartoonist. Nast had helped shape the American image of Santa Claus through his work for *Harper's Weekly*, and his holiday pictures often blend sentiment with sly social commentary.
