The title turns the opening line of Clement Clarke Moore's poem into a pun, moving the scene from night to the afternoon of Christmas Day. Clifford Berryman, a longtime Washington cartoonist, probably published this drawing in the Washington Star on Christmas Day, 1933, while the country was still deep in the Great Depression and the New Deal was reshaping federal life. The joke depends on readers knowing the poem, which was the holiday's most familiar text. Berryman, who created the 1902 teddy bear drawing that gave the toy its name, spent decades sketching the national scene.
