A caption card and the item itself give this print its title, "Christmas toys," and place it between 1908 and 1917, a window when American news photographers were documenting holiday shopping and seasonal displays. It comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Bain, a New York news photographer, built a large archive of pictures for his Bain News Service, and his negatives are valued today as a record of daily life in the early twentieth century. The caption card's subject tags, "Toys" and "Holidays," point to the commercial side of the season, when toys were central to Christmas gift-giving and to the stores that sold them.
