A commercial poster rather than a fine-art print, this color lithograph from about 1898 was made to sell toys during the holiday season. Strobridge Lithographing Company, which worked in Cincinnati and New York, was one of the largest American firms producing chromolithographed advertising, and its shops supplied bright posters to merchants across the country. By the late 1890s, factory-made toys were becoming more common, and holiday shopping was increasingly organized around department stores and catalogs. Images like this one helped tie Christmas to the idea of buying gifts for children.
