This Christmas Eve 1941 editorial cartoon borrows the famous opening of Clement Moore's poem to place Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill at the center of a holiday scene. The timing matters: Churchill had arrived in Washington only days earlier, a few weeks after Pearl Harbor and the German and Italian declarations of war on the United States. He stayed at the White House through the holidays as the two leaders planned their joint war effort, a meeting known as the Arcadia Conference. The drawing reflects how closely the public linked the two men as wartime partners at that moment.
