Set on the heights before Sebastopol, this scene shows a Christmas dinner held during the Crimean War, when Allied armies were besieging the Russian naval port that had begun in autumn 1854. The winter that followed was brutal for the troops, who endured cold, mud, disease and shortages of food and clothing, so a holiday meal in camp was a rare break from hardship. Such dinners often combined army rations with extras, including parcels sent from home. The scene is worth studying for how it sets a familiar festive ritual against the grim surroundings of the siege.
