A crowd of people waits at a window where Salvation Army workers handed out food baskets during a Christmas dinner effort in New York in 1908. The Salvation Army, founded in London in 1865 and active in the United States from 1880, ran holiday meals and relief for the city's poor, and by the early 1900s such distributions were a familiar winter sight in American cities. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a New York news photo service that supplied pictures to newspapers. The title was taken from data recorded with the negative and has not been independently verified, so the exact location and date should be read with that caveat.
